Ann Mallen is an endometriosis and breast cancer survivor and lives with lupus and a very rare blood disorder: Mixed Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (both warm AIHA and Cold Agglutinin Disease). Due to the chronic nature of her illnesses, she is always considered either moderately immunocompromised or severely immunocompromised, depending on her treatment schedule.
Ann Mallen:
-was sponsored by a large corporation to attend a patient summit in 2024 and 2025.
-participated in the creation of an advocacy guide for autoimmune patients.
-presented for the Autoimmune Hemolytic Awareness Day (March 25) an online event in 2024, 2025, and 2026
-was a patient reviewer for the Plain Language Summary of a research article about survival patterns in autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
-presented a workshop at the WAIHA Patient Meeting in Austin, TX, May 2025 “The Muse Within: Creative Expression and the Link to Wellbeing”
-was accepted to attend a national conference for patient advocates in Princeton, N.J.
-asked her State Senator for assistance and Pennsylvania Senate Resolution 230 was introduced recognizing Autoimmune Hemolytic Awareness Day, March 25, 2026.
*Note* Corporate sponsorship can be highly effective to connect patients for support, advocacy, and a better understanding of symptoms and outcomes. Mallen is deeply grateful for the connections these sponsorships provide. However, her core values don’t necessarily align with “for profit” corporations and/or hierarchical institutions.
